Product: LEAF by Oscar, Sumatra Size: 6×50 Wrapper: Sumatra Binder: Honduran Filler: Honduran Price: Purchased a Five Pack for $39.99 at Rodrigo Cigars; Single cigars for $9.19 at 2 Guys Cigars
While the convenience of having a B&M that is proactive in acquiring new cigars for its customers to purchase, it is often times much easier for me as resident of a state that more heavily taxes tobacco to search online for deals. One of the perks of writing here is that sometimes those deals come to me. I got an email last week notifying me of the special on LEAF by Oscar cigars from Rodrigo Cigars. And seeing the deal on those particular cigars, I was reminded that David reviewed three of the four blends already. Needless to say, I was more than happy to pick up a sampler to review the remaining blend: the Sumatra.
Each LEAF by Oscar cigar is wrapped in their respective wrapper. To my knowledge, this is the first time I have seen this before. Taking the cigar out of the wrapper, I found it perfectly preserved withzero imperfections. Pre-light notes of hay and straw almost immediately erupted when I unraveled the wrapper around the cigar. After a punch and a light, I found the cigar to have a balanced draw with opening notes of wood and a touch of spice that hit all the way around the palette. The cigar’s strength right at medium body and stays that way for the vast majority of the cigar. Ten minutes, I found the spice to mellow out and more or less disappear from the flavor profile for the rest of the smoking time. From here, the Sumatra blend held the woody flavors all the way until the last fourth of the cigar, where I found the wood notes and the strength basically get turned up to a 7.5 from a 5, if that makes sense. Total smoking time for the cigar was 1:08.
I encountered no issues in smoking the Sumatra blend of LEAF by Oscar. The burn stayed even throughout. The draw was balanced and didn’t need any loosening up. The cigar didn’t go out on me. All in all, it was an enjoyable smoke.
By-The-Numbers Prelight: 2/2 Construction: 2/2 Flavor: 4/5 Value: 1/1 Total: 9/10
To recap the LEAF by Oscar, Sumatra:
- If you are looking for a medium body cigar, consider this. The Sumatra wrapper gives different flavor notes from that of more common Connecticut or Maduro wrappers.
- This cigar can be enjoyed by all ranges of cigar smoker without worry.
- Getting the five pack of these cigars (or I would imagine any of their line) for $8 per stick is a nice deal to be had. Even at $9.19 from 2 Guys Cigars, I still consider this a fair price.
- For me, I would have preferred a broader strength range on the flavor profile, which is the only reason I took a point away. At the end of the day, this is a great cigar and I will be buying more of these in the future.
As always, thank you very much for reading and I look forward to the next time I can share my thoughts with you.
