Chemical exfoliants are not well suited for my skin as somehow my skin keeps rejecting the chemical-based exfoliating products. So my next best friend is the physical/manual sugar scrub. While some of you may think sugar scrubs are harsh for the skin, these newer sugar scrubs have such fine sugar particles that they do not feel abrasive on the skin. I personally feel sugar scrubs are very multifunctional. Perfect as a lip scrub to buff away the dead skin (especially since now it is soon to be winter), gentle scrub for the face, or it can even be used for body areas like the elbows, heels, or hands. Having tried the Klairs Youthful Glow Sugar Scrub, it is time for me to try the Klairs Gentle Black Sugar Facial Polish. How different is the Klairs Gentle Black Sugar Facial Polish from the Youthful Glow Sugar Scrub? Let’s find out more in this Klairs Gentle Black Sugar Facial Polish Review.

Klairs Gentle Black Sugar Facial Polish

How effective are Sugar Scrubs?

When I think of scrubs, the St. Ives Apricot scrub immediately comes to my mind. Now, I cringe at the memory of how harshly I used them during my teens. So in all honesty, I had stayed away from sugar scrubs, not just sugar scrubs but all forms of physical exfoliating scrubs until the recent I’m From Fig Scrub Mask. Gone are the days when sugar scrubs felt chunky and harsh. These newer scrubs contain the finest forms of sugar that are not only gentle but also very therapeutic.

So the big question is, do sugar scrubs work?

Sugar scrubs are arguably the most effective form of physical exfoliation. The sheer pleasure of a satisfying feeling of massage using sugar scrubs is undeniably pleasing. Sugar scrubs have been around for decades and are still a very popular form of physical exfoliant. Sucrose aka sugar is a natural humectant and has the ability to provide moisture along with rich minerals.

What is in this Klairs Gentle Black Sugar Facial Polish?

The Klairs Gentle Black Sugar Facial Polish contains Black Sugar, Shea Butter, Unsaturated Fatty Acid, and vitamins A & E to moisturize and soften dry, sensitive skin while gently removing dead skin cells.

Black sugar is a natural source of glycolic acid, an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) that penetrates the skin for a deep cleanse and facilitates cell turnover to reveal a fresher, smoother looking skin.

Claims: Gently cleans pore-clogging debris and removes dead skin cells while also providing hydration.

How to use the Klairs Gentle Black Sugar Facial Polish?

  • Gentle scrub for the face: Massage on a slightly wet face after cleansing and massage the scrub gently in circular motions using fingertips. Rinse off with lukewarm water. For an even gentle scrub, mix in the scrub to your favorite foam or oil cleanser.
  • Perfect luxury scrub for the body: Massage the scrub on your body after a bath or a shower when the skin has been softened. On areas like the elbows, hands, or back, this scrub feels extremely relaxing. Using this as a body scrub helps to buff out dead skin revealing soft and smooth skin.
  • As a lip scrub: Probably the best way to use a sugar scrub is to use it as a lip scrub. For dry, cracked lips, using this as a lip scrub exfoliates the dead cells leaving your lips smooth, plump, and fuller.
  • For an at-home manicure/pedicure: Elevate at-home manicure/pedicure by using the scrub to gently exfoliate dead skin from hands and feet especially the nail cuticle area.

How often should a scrub be used?

The face has delicate skin, hence using sugar scrubs should preferably be limited to once a week. For the body, once to twice a week is the preferred choice.

Note: Do not forget to properly moisturize the skin after using a scrub.

When not to use a scrub?

When the skin feels irritated or sensitive, especially after a sunburn or from irritation by skincare products, scrubs should be avoided at all costs.

My Thoughts

How I use this is on a slightly damp face and I would recommend using facial scrubs on a wet face. This helps the scrub to move around easily without causing much friction or damage to the skin.

I have tried this on its own and have also tried pairing this with a cleansing oil. The gentleness of the scrub can be totally maneuvered by how you massage. A little firm massage around the neck and chin area and a gentler massage on the face.

This sugar scrub emulsifies beautifully when in contact with water. So for those who still prefer a milder exfoliating effect, adding water while massaging will help tone down the exfoliation process. Or better, pairing this scrub with an oil cleanser will yield to a gentler exfoliating experience.

The other way how I like to use is by pairing it with the I’m From Honey Mask. The addition of honey to the sugar scrub gives the whole scrub experience a gentle and moisturizing feel. This is probably my best way to use this sugar scrub.

The Klairs Gentle Black Sugar Facial Polish washes off easily without leaving any residue and without causing any skin dryness. The softness and suppleness the scrub brings to my skin are unbelievably good. My skin feels supple, smooth, clean, and refreshed.

Final Thoughts

From being a person who stayed away from scrubs to now being a proud mother of three, I can definitely see myself enjoying a sugar scrub. Once you know how to correctly use a sugar scrub, you will appreciate it more. A high sugar diet can be of no good, but using a topical sugar will surely bring some pretty sweet results.
