Overview
As I approach my forties and need to do more adulting, stress and sleep are starting to affect my skin. Pimples and eye bags are part of my problem. My elderly relatives used to tell me that young people get pimples. I’d like to believe that but I somehow don’t think Auntie Iris is a dermatology expert.
My skin becomes oily at the end of the day, which becomes more obvious during web meetings where my forehead reflects the light into the camera.
While I am usually religious with my twice-a-day face washing routine, I sometimes skim through it or skip the one in the morning if I feel clean enough—bad idea.
More than the quantity of wash, the quality matters. That’s where the FOREO LUNA comes in. It’s basically a hand-held face massager than will help give you a deeper cleanse.
I’ve been using the Luna 2 for about five years now. And the folks at FOREO sent over the rest of the collection, the LUNA 3 for Men, LUNA fofo, and LUNA Go for Men (LUNA Mini 3 wasn’t in stock), to do an in-depth analysis, hoping to answer the following.
- Do I really need the FOREO LUNA?
- Is it a chore to use?
- Which model is best for me?
- and more
Style
Hailing from Sweden, the nordic style is expressed in classic minimalism and functionality.
The LUNA, whichever model you get, is small and compact. It fits into the palm of your hand with ease. In fact, I was able to hold the LUNA 3, fofo, and Go in one hand.
Even LUNA 3, the largest of the series, fits comfortably in your hand. I was actually surprised they felt the need to release travel versions like the Go.
The LUNAs come in multiple colors, but black is the obvious choice. In fact, there are two models that I won’t include in my review because they didn’t come in black; the Luna Plus and Luna Luxe.
Except for the fofo, each of the LUNA has a clear base. The LUNA 3, unfortunately, has the logo in white and catches your attention immediately. They should have kept it black-on-black like the Luna 2.
There is nothing much negative to say about the design of the LUNA except one thing. I hesitate to bring it up, but it looks like… a sex toy. I mean, it vibrates as well. I brought it for a homestay once, and the host asked me awkwardly what it was.
While it’s not a deal-breaker, it is definitely something to note if you are frequently leaving it out in the open.
While not about the device itself, I need to point out the horrid color selection for the pouch that the LUNA 3 comes with. While the fofo and Go come in a standard grey pouch, the LUNA 3 comes in a pink pouch.
Suffice to say; I will be using one of my TOM BIHN Ghost Whale Organizers instead.
Technology
The core technology of the LUNA 3 is the T-Sonic™ pulsations that massage your skin and remove up to 99.5% of impurities. There can be up to 8,000 pulsations per minute at 16 different intensities.
While it sounds intense, the pulsations are actually so gentle and fast that it channels a low-frequency massage to help relax muscle tension and improve blood flow.
The pulsations will dilate pores temporarily to allow your skincare to penetrate the outer layer of the skin without clogging the pores.
Usage
The LUNA collection of devices is effortless to use.
- Wet your face and put on your cleanser. Any would work although exfoliating or clay-based kind might damage the LUNA. PS. Each LUNA comes with a sample pack of the FOREO Cleanser for men.
- Just press the button to start the pulsation and massage the cleanser onto your face.
- The LUNA will rub most of the cleanser away so be sure to scrub your face before if you like to do so with your hands.
- Press the button again to put it on standby and rinse and dry your face.
- Press it again to start anti-aging mode. Honestly, I usually skip this step.
- Press it again to deactivate.
As you can see, the operation is super simple. You have to press the button three times if you don’t want to do the anti-aging part, since you can’t deactivate it with one press after cleansing.
The ease of handling the LUNA is a big plus; It can get wet, including the charging point on the back. It is also extremely durable, and you can drop it without consequence.
Charging
Plug the AC charger to the back of the LUNA and into a wall socket to charge. Pretty straightforward… unless you lose it. Then you would have to buy an AC charger just for it.
The lack of USB-C (or even USB-A) charging is the biggest issue to me as someone trying to keep this device to a minimum. This is especially problematic for models like the Go, which has a less battery capacity. You’ll likely have to bring a dedicated charger for longer trips, defeating the advantage of its compact dimensions.
FOREO LUNA 3 vs LUNA Go
It is straightforward to compare LUNA 3 and LUNA Go. Go is designed for travel, so it is much smaller. Because it is small, it offers less surface contact with your skin, making the cleansing process longer.
I personally prefer the LUNA 3. Using the Go kind of feels like using two fingers to wash your face instead of your hands. The Go is great for when you really need the extra space. Otherwise, the Luna 3 feels nicer to hold and use.
For those who prefer the LUNA Go, it’s worth noting that there are sacrifices that come with a smaller size. In the LUNA Go’s case, the battery is approximately a tenth of the LUNA 3. So, even if you bring along a smaller device, you would probably have to bring along the charger for a longer trip.
FOREO LUNA 3 vs LUNA fofo
The selling point of the fofo is the sensor that reads your skin and tailors the massage and cleansing profile according to it. I am skeptical that this will result in a big difference from the other LUNAs, but it is nice to have.
While the fofo is much smaller than the LUNA 3, it is slightly larger than the Go. The biggest factor for the fofo is that it is battery-operated. While you can load it with rechargeable batteries, I prefer to have my devices chargeable and would recommend the LUNA 3 over the fofo.
Conclusion
Do you need the LUNA? Not really, but it is really, really nice to have as part of your routine. Just the feeling of ultra-clean skin is worth the price.
The LUNA is a one-of-kind device that will upgrade your skincare routine. It is fuss-free and easy to use. The biggest issue is the lack of USB-C, or even USB-A, charging. If this can change, the FOREO LUNA would be indispensable to the modern male.
Out of the three models I tested, I would recommend the LUNA 3. The charging situation of the other two is the main factor for my choice. LUNA 3, despite being larger than the other two, is still compact enough for travel and will last the entirety of most trips without the need for charging.
